VPD Isn't As Scary As It Sounds

When growing indoors you can have two tents running side by side same strain, same nutrients, same light. One was thriving. The other just looked... sad. Droopy, unhappy, not itself. You can chase that problem for way longer than you would like to admit before you realise it wasn't the plants at all. It was the air. Understanding VPD can be the difference between guessing and knowing why your plants are stressed.

Temperature and humidity don’t work in isolation. They work together to create Vapor Pressure Deficit, which controls how your plants breathe, drink, and grow. Get it right and everything else gets easier.

What even is VPD?

VPD stands for Vapour Pressure Deficit. Fancy name, simple idea.

It's just the gap between how much moisture is in the air and how much moisture the air could hold. That gap is what makes your plants breathe and drink the way they do.

Picture the air like a sponge. VPD tells you how thirsty that sponge is. Too thirsty, and it sucks moisture out of your plants faster than they can handle. Too soggy, and your plants can't push moisture out properly either way.

Why should you care?

Because VPD quietly controls a lot:

  • How fast your plants transpire
  • How well they take up nutrients
  • How stressed or happy they look

Most of the "mystery problems" growers chase for weeks trace back to one thing. The air isn't letting the plant do its job.

The numbers that matter

Here's roughly where you want to sit:

  • Seedlings and clones: 0.4–0.8 kPa. Keep it gentle and humid.
  • Vegetative Stage: 0.8–1.0 kPa.
  • Flower Stage: 1.0–1.4 kPa. Plants are working harder now.

And here's the bit that trips people up. Temp and humidity are a team, not solo acts. 25°C at 60% RH feels totally different to your plants than 28°C at 60% RH, even though the humidity number is the same.

So how do you fix it?

Turns out, it's a lot less complicated than it sounds.

Can't shift the temperature much? Nudge the humidity instead. Can't shift the humidity? Play with the temp. Grab a free VPD chart or calculator online and just eyeball where you're sitting.

Small tweaks go a long way. You don't need to overhaul your whole setup however having the right gear goes a long way. Here's what we rate from AC Infinity:

Humidifier Your go-to if the air's too dry (especially with heaters running in winter). Cheapest, fastest way to nudge VPD down.

Dehumidifier The opposite problem, usually shows up in flower or in humid climates. Stops mould and bud rot before they start.

Heater If your tent's running cold, a small thermostat-controlled heater can bring the temp up without you having to mess with humidity at all.

Extraction fan Honestly one of the most underrated VPD tools. Good airflow stops stagnant, overly humid pockets forming around your canopy, and helps pull that stale air out so fresh air (with a healthier VPD) comes in.

Thermo-hygrometer Can't fix what you're not measuring. A cheap digital one with min/max memory tells you exactly where you're sitting, day and night.

Bottom line

You don't need to be an expert to get this right. You just need to know it exists.

Two identical tents can perform totally differently, and now you know why. Get your VPD dialled in, and your plants really do show you the difference.
